The New Bridge

A new bridge to the site from the west bank of the River Medway has always been seen as an essential part of the proposals. The new Medway Valley crossing will be built to access Peters Village and will join the A228 at the new roundabout north of Snodland and south of the village of Halling. The bridge design will include a separated cycle track and footpath. For the first time this will mean that east bank residents can easily travel to the facilities and train stations at Snodland and Halling.

The design of the Medway Valley Crossing was created following discussions with the Highway Authorities, Network Rail, Medway Ports and Mersey Docks and Harbour Boards. The bridge is five metres above the track level of the Strood to Paddock Wood railway line to accommodate Network Rail's safety requirements. It is approximately 11 metres above the river for navigational purposes and the bridge piers have been designed to withstand the potential impact of the 825 tonne vessels that still use this stretch of the Medway. The crossing has been designed to make sure that it will not reduce the storage capacity of the river or make flooding more likely further downstream.
The alignment of the crossing has also been influenced by the surrounding environment and the need to meet highway design standards.

The bridge will be the main route for all construction vehicles into the new village. It will also encourage new residents to get to the new village from the A228 rather than using other minor roads on the east bank.
