Peters Pit Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) has been rated as being in 100 per cent favourable condition by Natural England, the public body responsible for helping to conserve and enhance the U.K.’s natural environment. The site, which is managed by Kent Wildlife Trust on behalf of Trenport Investments and Aylesford Newsprint is home to one of England’s largest populations of Great Crested Newts. The project ensures that large numbers of the species are protected long into the future and that the remainder of the site is well managed to improve and shelter its diverse wildlife.

Latest News - March 2008

Start of construction of the new Medway Valley Crossing, together with road improvements and infrastructure for 1000 new homes at Peters Village between Wouldham and Burham, is to be deferred until a formal Agreement for access rights over the River Medway and the railway line is settled. Negotiations are continuing between interested parties with a view to reaching agreement at an early date.

Meanwhile, the site has been prepared; clearance and demolition work completed, new ecological habitats created and movement of wildlife in the area finished.

Tenders for the circa £30M civil engineering works have been received and are being considered, but due to the extensive nature of weather sensitive earthmoving involved, work is now unlikely to commence before spring 2009.

To minimise the effect of the delay, our contractors will use the opportunity to progress their detailed engineering designs so that works can commence quickly once the necessary agreements have been received.

We are pleased to announce our selection of The Guinness Trust as our preferred partner with whom we are working to finalise an Agreement for the integration and delivery of affordable homes. We are looking forward to them delivering 250 affordable homes across the development in due course.

The finalisation of a Residential Design Code will ensure that future residential developers will deliver a consistently high quality built environment with diverse and distinctive neighbourhoods each with their own sense of place, once sites are released.

Project Director, Bob Hamblyn said; “This is a huge and complex project and we are delighted with the progress we have made since gaining planning consent in May 2006. Whilst delay is always unwelcome, it is by no means unusual for projects of this size and complexity to suffer delays and we remain positive that these will soon be overcome”

Transport Links

The project seeks to reduce the impact of cars on the surrounding area on the east bank. This will be achieved by:-
  • Early provision of the new Medway bridge.
  • Excellent cycle, pedestrian and bridle links within the development and to the surrounding area.
  • Provision of a range of local facilities within walking and cycling distance.
  • Restricted vehicle speeds through the village centre with priority to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • A 'greenway' link to the north of the village that will allow for buses, pedestrians and cyclists. It will be designed to deter motorists from going north through Wouldham.
  • Improvements to existing bus services that will route through the new village and will be more frequent than at present.
  • A series of road improvements to the south of the new village.

Road improvements

To the south of Peters Village there will be a series of improvements to local roads:

In Burham: Court Road will be routed away from existing houses and a new area of open space created. Access to houses on the old section of Court Road will be maintained.

Alex Hill footpath: Leading out of Burham, on the right hand side of Rochester Road, the new footpath will run from the top of new Court Road to Bull Lane.

The above two improvements have come about as a direct result of consultations with local residents.

Old Church Road to Court Road route: Old Church Road will be widened and upgraded. A new south east route to the Margetts Lane/Court Road junction will be constructed and continue along an improved Court Road to the new Court Road route above.

Pilgrims Way: from Bull Lane to Rochester Road, including localised road widening, road markings and minor construction or reinstatement.
